Bassoon

Two and a half metres of conical bore folded in half, played with a double reed — the bass voice of the woodwinds, and the funniest and saddest of them.

Sits well in

Concert pitch, reading bass and tenor clef. Flat keys are its orchestral home.

How it works

A double reed on a bocal drives a very long conical column. The fingering system predates modern key work, so it is full of exceptions you learn one at a time.

what sounds middle C

Against a piano's 88 keys, A0 to C8. It reads and sounds in the same place.

Drills 2

A session's worth. Each one has a single point — do that, not the whole list.

  1. Low register long tones6 min

The bottom fifth, which needs air more than embouchure.

    1. From low F downward, eight beats each, as loud as it will speak cleanly.
    2. Open the throat and relax the lip — squeezing kills the low notes.
    3. Five notes, then rest.
  2. Flick keys in tempo6 min

The left thumb, which has more jobs than any other digit in music.

    1. Slur from low to middle A, G and E, using the flick keys.
    2. Then play a passage that crosses that register repeatedly.
    3. Slow enough that the thumb never guesses.

Worth practising on it

Suggested from what the pipeline measured — key, meter, tempo and the chords as played. Each one says why it is here.
