Melodica

A keyboard you blow into: free reeds like a harmonica, laid out like a piano, and portable enough to take anywhere.

Concert pitch with a piano layout — theory transfers straight from the keyboard pages.

How it works

Breath drives free reeds; the keys open valves to choose which reeds sound. Dynamics come entirely from breath pressure, so the keyboard itself is touch-insensitive.

what sounds middle C

Against a piano's 88 keys, A0 to C8. It reads and sounds in the same place.

Drills 2

A session's worth. Each one has a single point — do that, not the whole list.

  1. Breath dynamics5 min

Shaping a phrase with air, since the keys cannot do it.

    1. Hold one note and crescendo, then diminuendo, over eight beats.
    2. Then play a four-note melody with a shape: soft, loud, soft.
    3. Keep the fingers identical throughout; only the air changes.
  2. Two-hand chords and melody6 min

Using both hands on a keyboard you also have to hold.

    1. Rest the melodica on a table and use the mouthpiece tube.
    2. Left hand on chord roots and thirds, right hand on melody.
    3. Play a four-chord loop from the library this way.

Nothing linked yet. The pipeline never measures who plays what, so this list is human-curated: add recordings to the 🎙️ Recordings relation on this instrument's row in 🎻 MUSIC INSTRUMENTS [DB] and they show up here.

Worth practising on it

Suggested from what the pipeline measured — key, meter, tempo and the chords as played. Each one says why it is here.

Roster and “heard on” links from 🎻 MUSIC INSTRUMENTS [DB]. Breakdown, drills and tips are written into the site — craft knowledge, not measurements. Practice suggestions come from the same enriched recording data the song pages show.
