How it works

Bowed like a violin but larger and heavier, so the string speaks more slowly. You have to give the note time to start, which is why viola playing sounds broader.

1. Slow starts on the C string5 min

   Letting the thickest string actually speak.

   1. Open C, whole bow, eight beats. Listen to the first half-second.
   2. If the note starts with a scrape, you gave weight before speed.
   3. Ten repetitions, aiming for a clean, immediate tone.
2. Alto clef reading6 min

   Reading the clef without translating from treble.

   1. Read four bars of any viola part out loud by note name, no instrument.
   2. Then play them slowly.
   3. Do this before playing, every session, until the middle line is C without thinking.

Tips

• A viola is not a big violin — the left hand needs wider spacing and more arm weight.
• Watch the shoulder rest height; the extra body size makes a violin setup uncomfortable fast.
• Practise with cello and violin recordings, not just viola ones. The role is between them.
