How it works

Air is set vibrating — by a reed, or by splitting across an edge — inside a tube, and opening holes along that tube shortens the column and raises the pitch.

1. Long tones6 min

   A steady note is the whole instrument. Everything else is that, in order.

   1. Take a comfortable mid-range note and hold it for as long as the breath is even.
   2. Stop the moment the pitch or the tone wavers — that is the note ending, not you giving up.
   3. Move up a semitone and repeat, five notes in all.
2. Chromatic fingering ladder7 min

   The awkward fingerings, met on purpose instead of by accident.

   1. Play a slow chromatic octave, slurred, at 60 bpm.
   2. Mark every note where the fingers hesitate.
   3. Play just those notes and their neighbours, ten times each.
3. Articulation ladder5 min

   The tongue starting the note cleanly at any speed.

   1. One note, four beats: whole, then half, then quarter, then eighth notes.
   2. Keep the air constant — the tongue interrupts it, it does not create it.
   3. Raise the metronome by 4 bpm and repeat.

Tips

• Support comes from the middle, not the throat. A tight throat sounds thin and tires fast.
• Swab after playing, every time. Moisture is what cracks and warps a body.
• Reeds are consumable and inconsistent — keep several going, rotate them, and retire them early.
